What is the difference between an Engine and a Truck?

Fire engines deploy fire suppression hose lines while truck crews assist them by gaining access to secure buildings, ventilating the involved structure, and assisting with search and rescue operations. Engine and truck crews work as coordinated teams to achieve common goals - both relying on each other to perform their specialized tasks. Trucks can also provide elevated hose streams when supplied with water from an engine.

Fire Engine

• Water tank (usually 500-750 gallons)
• Pump (approximately 1500 GPM)
• Complement of various types of hose (for both attack and supply)

Fire Truck

• Hydraulically operated (aerial) ladder
• Full complement of ground ladders of various types and lengths
• Specialized equipment for forcible entry, ventilation, and search and rescue tasks
